Bonus 146: Trump vs. the Law Firms

A conversation about the Trump administration's novel attacks on law firms; the firms' (varying) responses; and the broader implications of these developments for legal practice and the rule of law.

Welcome back to the weekly bonus content for “One First.” Although Monday’s regular newsletter will remain free for as long as we’re able to do this, much of Thursday’s bonus content is behind a paywall as an added incentive for those who are willing and able to support the work that goes into putting this newsletter together every week. I’m grateful to those of you who are already paid subscribers, and I hope that those of you who aren’t will consider a paid subscription if and when your circumstances permit.

Among other things, today, May 1, is “Law Day”—a “national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law,” in the words of the American Bar Association. To that end, it seemed like an especially good time to have a conversation about the unprecedented attacks by the Trump administration on law firms; how the responses from firms have varied; and the broader implications of all of these developments not just for law school education and legal practice, but for the rule of law itself. To that end, Steve sat down with two especially savvy observers of all things lawyering—his Georgetown colleague, Jonah Perlin (who, among other things, hosts the “How I Lawyer” podcat); and his better half, Karen Vladeck (who, among other things, is Founder and Managing Partner of Risepoint Search Partners—a legal recruiting boutique).

For those who are not paid subscribers, we’ll be back Monday (if not sooner) with our regular coverage of the Supreme Court. For those who are, we hope you’ll take a listen and enjoy a different kind of “One First” bonus issue.
